This was a stage stop on the Grand Forks-Fort Totten trail, sometimes called THOMSON'S GROVE, in Section 30-153-55, Agnes Township about two miles northwest of McCanna. The name was coined by James H. Mathews and W. N. Roach while establishing the mail route, noting that most settlers in the area were Norwegians, and only one had a family. He was Hans Hanson, and the township was named for his daughter, the first white baby born here. The latter part of the name noted the many trees along the nearby Turtle River. The site was abandoned after the building of the Great Northern Railroad in the late 1880s.(2, 31, 69, 79)
