This Soo Line Railroad townsite was founded in 1892 in Sections 3 & 4-136-55, Liberty Township at the southernmost bend of the Maple River. The name is said to be a fictional character in a book, suggested by either Mrs. A. L. Allen or Mrs. Fred D. Underwood, both wives of Soo Line Railroad officials, but folklore insists that the name is coined from German workers in the region when the site was the terminus of the branch line, or the "end der line. The post office was established October 10, 1891 with Nels O. Akre as Postmaster. It became a city in 1897 with Dr. Olaf Sherping mayor. The elevation is 1082, the Zip Code is 58027, and a peak population of 1,919 was recorded in 1920. Hjalmer Nygaard, a Congressman from North Dakota 1961-1963, was born here.(1, 2, 3, 18, 25, 33, 40, 52, 79)
