This Soo Line Railroad townsite was founded in 1913 in the southeast quarter of section 27-163-101, DeWitt Township and named by railroad officials at the suggestion of Rosie Jeglum to note the settlers expectations of prosperity with the coming of the railroad. Fortuna was the Roman god of good luck. The new townsite absorbed the nearby community of Norge, with as Postmaster Clarence C. Gilday moving that post office here October 11, 1913. The Zip Code is 58844, and a peak population of 214 was reached in 1940, which remained fairly constant until a general decline in the 1970's, resulting in a 1980 count of just 97.(2, 3, 18, 19, 34, 40, 73, 79)
