Michigan City (Nelson County)
This Great Northern Railroad townsite was founded in 1882 by Edwin A. Lamb, who came here from Port Huron, Michigan with his family. Despite the fact that the Lambs came from the state of Michigan, some claim the townsite was named for Michigan City, Indiana. The name is an Indian word of uncertain origin derived from Mitchisawgyegan meaning great lake, or Mishi-maikin-nac, meaning swimming turtle. It is located in the southeast quarter of section 32-153-58, Michigan City Township and was the first settlement in Nelson County. The official name is still MICHIGAN CITY, but the shortened form MICHIGAN has had almost universal usage since pioneer days.(2, 3, 10, 18, 25, 58, 124, 128)
